Library
The Library serves as a focal point for the school by implementing, enriching, and supporting the educational programs of the school.  It is the goal of the Library to enhance the school curriculum through a variety of sources and new technologies, and to foster lifelong learning and literacy through reading.

Battle of the Books Team Chosen
Congratulations to the following students who will represent our school at the county wide competition on March 26, 2013.  Practice begins in February and continues through March, every Tuesday and Thursday, from 3 to 3:45. Good Luck DSMS!!

April 15, 2013=have all 10 Virginia Readers Choice Books Read and get a limousine ride to Carl's Ice Cream
The ReadAR Games Continue
“The HungAR ReadAR games will continue until the end of the school year.  Points have been calculated and posted in the cafeteria.   An ice cream party will be given to students who have 50 or more AR points for this nine weeks.  Free dessert passes will be given to students with points between 25 and 49 points. Congratulations to ALL Students.   
Reading Programs at DSMS
 
Virginia Readers Choice Books: There are 10 books in this program. This list of books can be found in the library files below. Students who read all 10 books by the beginning of April will be treated to a limousine ride to Carl’s Ice Cream. Students are required to take and pass the AR quiz for each book.
 
Café Books is a lunchtime book discussion club co-sponsored by the Central Rappahannock Regional Library and Dixon-Smith’s Media Center. This program is open ONLY to 7th and 8th graders and meets every other week, September through January. Café Book features 20 books published in the year 2011 - 2012 that represent a variety of genres and reading levels. Students are asked to read at least 3 of the 20 books and bring their lunch to the library to discuss them. At the end of the program students take a field trip to the downtown public library and have pizza for lunch. The fabulous books have been chosen and they are listed below!
Cafe Book for 2012 is over.  The next Cafe Book will begin in the fall of 2013.
 
The Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for middle school students across the country that encourages students to read quality literature. There are 15 books in this program and they are listed below in the library files.    Students are asked to read at least five of the fifteen books for details. A team of no more than 12 students is chosen to compete with the seven other middles schools in Stafford County. Practice begins after winter break and the final competition day is scheduled for March, 2013 at Gayle Middle School. Please see Mrs. Ward if you are interested.
 
Accelerated Reader Points: Students are encouraged to read books and take the AR quiz for the book. Incentives are given to students with 25 or more points each nine weeks. Previous rewards have been free dessert passes, ice cream sundae invitations, doughnut parties, and pizza for students with 100 or more points by the end of the school year. The top students in each grade level will be given a limousine ride to Carl’s Ice Cream at the end of the school year.
